Background
Xuan joined the Centre for Writing and Scholarly Communication (CWSC) in July 2021. She holds a B.A. in Japanese Literature from China, an M.A. in Second Language Education from Japan, and a PhD. in Audiology and Speech Sciences from UBC.
Her doctoral research focused on the development of academic language competence of adolescent multilingual students in Canada.
Current Role and Responsibilities
As a multilingual academic and applied linguist, Xuan brings both deep personal insight and research-based expertise to her work with graduate students and researchers. Grounded in current scholarship in applied linguistics and second language acquisition, she designs and leads evidence-based workshops that address key aspects of academic writing and scholarly communication. Her work focuses on advancing academic language development across disciplines, with a particular emphasis on supporting multilingual writers in becoming proficient in, and confidently navigating, the linguistic and rhetorical expectations of research writing in English.
